Reprogramming

How to navigate from the military to a successful civilian career with confidence

What is Reprogramming?

Reprogramming is a live six-course, online seminar for Active Duty members of the Armed Forces and recently transitioned military veterans to assist in their transition from the military. The US Military does an exceptional job of programming civilians to become warriors, but a poor job of reprogramming them to become successful civilians. This program is designed to fill that gap and give you the tools you need to approach your career transition with confidence.

Seminar Overview

Each course consists of a:

  • 40-MIN INTERACTIVE PRESENTATION

  • 20-MINUTE QUESTION & ANSWER PERIOD.

  • 1-3 “MISSIONS” – A CHALLENGE TO ACHIEVE PRIOR TO THE NEXT COURSE, WITH PARTICIPANTS SHARING THEIR RESULTS AND EXPERIENCE

  • FOLLOW-UP SURVEY TO COLLECT ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS TO BE COVERED AT THE START OF THE NEXT SESSION.

Course Syllabus (subject to change based on group feedback & progress):

Session 1: Overview & Cold Emailing – in addition to general introductions for the group, we’ll talk about how this course differs from every training you’ve had in the military. We’ll discuss how to get the most from the subsequent sessions and the overall course structure. We’ll go through a process and free technologies you can use to identify mentors, advisors, and potential hirers, and how you can connect with them. And before Session 2, you’ll put these tools to use – you’ll come to Session2 being able to report on how many meetings you’ve scheduled, and what you learned.

Session 2: Career Landscape Overview – upon leaving Active Duty, most veterans are unaware of the vast spectrum of jobs for which they are extremely well qualified. In this session, we’ll go through an overview of the career landscape, as well as how to start figuring out the right path for you and your family.

Key questions to answer are:

  1. How do you figure out what you want to do?
  2. How do you sift through all of the potential jobs that are available and find one that matches your talents and interests?
  3. How do you identify your priorities, such as location, work environment, culture, etc. and are not just relying on what your experience has been in the military?
  4. What are common post-military career paths… and what are uncommon ones you might want to explore

Session 3: Networking & Interviews – networking, interviewing, and outreach are three areas that are essential in a civilian career but not practiced extensively in the military. In this session, we’ll go through ways in which veterans can approach networking authentically and confidently. We’ll also discuss keys to interviewing and how to get better.

Key questions to answer are:

  1. How to translate military skills and experience into practical skills in the civilian workforce
  2. What is “networking” and why does everyone say it’s so vital
  3. How to create meaningful connections in the civilian workforce while feeling authentic and true to your values

Session 4: Mindset – the single biggest component of making a successful transition to a civilian career is mindset. In nearly every interview I’ve conducted, I’ve heard about how false expectations and flawed approaches have led to unnecessary hardships. In this session we’ll cover common mistakes veterans make in their transition, and how to adopt a mindset that will be both more enjoyable and more likely to lead to a successful outcome.

Key questions to answer are:

  1. What is your ideal work-life balance (with actual numbers)?
  2. How do you find purpose and meaning in post-military life?
  3. How to better understand yourself, your motivations, and your ambitions?
  4. How can you look past your identity as a service member and get an idea of what your next step should be?

Session 5: Resources – many veterans I’ve interviewed experience a sense of disconnection and isolation following their transition. In this session, we’ll focus on the best resources that have been recommended by guests on Beyond the Uniform, and how you can tap into a variety of support networks to assist you in your unique transition.

Key questions to answer are:

  1. Who are mentors that can help you through this transition?
  2. What resources are available outside of T-GPS?
  3. How do you start to plan for transition? How early is too early to start planning?
  4. How to prepare your finances for the transition?

30-day Post-Seminar Group Check-in – one month after our seminar has concluded, we’ll check in one last time as a group to see how things are progressing, and answer questions that have come up along the way. The goal is to provide accountability, and allow for course corrections in the early stages of your applying this new process to your career transition.

Testimonials

Justin led a superb seminar providing valuable tools and perspectives not generally touched upon during service transition courses. I highly recommend it to other transitioning service members.

– Ford Ewaldsen, Navy O-5

The Reprogramming Seminar was highly beneficial during my transition from military to civilian life. The information Justin provided throughout the seminar was highly relevant and pertinent to the issues faced by transitioning members. Justin took a specific interest in each participant, catering our mentoring sessions to subjects that would be most beneficial participants in the group.

– Kathleen Dillon, Coast Guard O-2

Overall great experience, well worth the price! This was a good opportunity to interact with others who are considering or in the process of transitioning from the military. The group environment seemed to enhance everyones growth and learning.

-Steve K. Navy O-3
